The film begins in 1991, at a time when the entire Balkan region is in turmoil. Driven by the situation, six-year-old Maja travels to Denmark with her parents, leaving her two older brothers behind with the promise of a reunion soon. But the encounter with the promised land, Denmark, proves to be a tough test for the small family—and especially for Maja, who watches in wonder as her parents desperately try to adapt to a completely new world with its strange rules and traditions. While her mother and father struggle to adapt and soon realize that Denmark is far from the fairy-tale land they dreamed of, Maja quickly learns the foreign Danish language and consequently ends up taking on adult responsibility for her parents. Many years later, she has become a successful artist in Denmark, but behind her success lies a conflict between joy, sorrow, and gratitude for the life she has been given and the choices and sacrifices her parents made so that she could enjoy a carefree and worry-free childhood—but as we all know, all a price.
