This is a classic gem of a magnificent production of the gripping story of the hunchbacked and ridiculed court jester Rigoletto, who fights fiercely for respect. He does, however, have one bright spot in his life – his beloved daughter Gilda. Rigoletto will do anything to protect her from life's sorrows, but a terrible mistake causes his world to crumble.

This lavish 1982 Italian opera film, directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, starring Ingvar Wixell, Edita Gruberová and Luciano Pavarotti, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, is a huge experience.

The opera about the court jester Rigoletto, with a libretto by Piave based on Victor Hugo's "Le Roi s'amuse" (The King Amuses himself), premiered in Venice in 1851. After the Austrian censorship intervened, Verdi and the librettist Piave had to rewrite the opera. Therefore, it is not a king, but an unnamed duke, who is the seducer of women in the opera.
